Why can the Chinese people not freely access the Internet, read news from different positions or express their political views in public, as citizens of many countries in the world? The wall, which was established and sustained by the Communist Party of China, is receiving attention and challenges from an increasing number of Chinese citizens and international human rights activists abroad.

On 31 October, BanGFW shared a video of the speech in English on social platform X. The video shows that Lao Dynasty, the head of the Wallbreaking Campaign, spoke to the audience in the field at the relevant meeting of the Danish Red Cross Society, calling on the international community to work together to remove the Chinese firewall and to defend the fundamental right of Chinese citizens to freely obtain information and express their views.

In the video, Liu Dang Ling stood in front of the projection and told the audience about the reality of the Chinese Internet censorship. She spoke with a warm and firm tone of her dream: breaking the “digital iron curtain” in China and re-emerging the dawn of freedom in a society that is blocked by information.

> In China, people live under the shadow of an invisible web firewall. We cannot freely use Google to search for information or express our views, and it is even more difficult to know what really happened. The blogger adds:

Liu Dongling noted that at the beginning of the Internet, people had expected information to be able to cross national borders, free dissemination of knowledge and cross-cultural exchanges. However, the long-standing web censorship system implemented by the Communist Party has made it difficult for the Chinese people to have direct access to the vast information resources of the global Internet.

She stressed that the China Firewall was by no means just a technical issue, but was more directly related to freedom of thought, personal dignity and fundamental human rights.

Political control behind a firewall

The Great Firewall, built in the late 1990s, has long been developed into a major infrastructure for the control of Internet information flows in the Communist Party. Google, YouTube, X and a large number of international news sites are blocked in mainland China, and web discussions involving political, human rights, historical and public events are under constant review.

Such regulation has a direct impact on the perception of public affairs among Chinese citizens. It is difficult for the population to have free access to independent news, to verify public information and to understand political views that differ from those officially promoted by the Communist Party. The asymmetry of information on the Internet gives the ruling party the important power to determine what information can be widely disseminated and what voices must be excluded.

On 22 October 2026, Freedom House, the American human rights organization, published its annual Internet freedom report, which gave China only nine points, divided into 100 points, and classified it as an Internet “unfreedom” country. The report states that China has long been among the worst in terms of online freedom worldwide, and that citizens may be politically constrained by the dissemination of news, the expression of opinions and even the normal exchange of networks.

The political purpose of the Internet blockade has exceeded the restrictions on individual websites or statements. It has weakened citizens ' ability to access public information, monitor government power and participate in political discussions, and has allowed the Communist Party to maintain a high degree of control over public opinion.

The Wall Breakers are sentenced

Liu Dong Ling is not the first to publicly oppose the China network blockade.

In March 2023, she began to appeal to the international community to eliminate the Chinese cyber firewall and to guarantee freedom of information for Chinese citizens. One of the campaign ' s sponsors, Jo Zhao, a former Yang Ze Wei, was taken from Laos in May of the same year and then returned to China.

In October 2024, human rights organizations disclosed that João had been sentenced to five years' imprisonment for “inciting subversion of State power”. A citizen who advocates the lifting of the Internet blockade and the promotion of Internet freedom, eventually lost his personal liberty for political offences, reflects the strong repression of independent social initiatives by the Communist Party.

Following the arrest of João, Liu Dang Ling undertook the important organizational work of the Wallbreaking Campaign. According to Avocats America, she had organized volunteers, continued to promote international attention and faced difficulties in Europe because of the issue of political asylum applications. In 2024, her asylum application in Denmark was rejected and her son travelled to Sweden.

Despite the personal circumstances, Liu Dynamite has insisted on promoting the wall-breaking campaign through public speaking, international exchange and human rights initiatives.

Let the Chinese have the right to choose their own information

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights clearly guarantees the right of everyone to seek, receive and impart information freely and without any restrictions on national borders.

This principle applies equally to Chinese citizens. A person has the right to judge independently whether the news is credible, to compare different political views and to criticize the policies of the ruling party and the leaders of the State. No Government should consider the regular access of citizens to information as a political threat.

In her Danish speech, Liu Dynamite made this claim very clear:

> Let us be more clear about right and wrong, and questions drive us to think in depth, and open communication brings us to the truth. The blogger adds:

She called on the international community to focus on the issue of web censorship, encouraging respect for facts, verification of information, independent thinking and listening to different voices.

As we approach the end of the speech, Liu Dang Ling invites the audience: “The wall may block the road, but it should never block the mind!” Are you ready to work with me? The blogger adds:

The dismantling of the Chinese cyber firewall is ultimately about whether Chinese citizens can get rid of the political monopoly of information by the Communist Party, gain an independent understanding of the world, judge public affairs and freely express their ideas.

Liu Dong Ling's speech in Denmark brought the Chinese online censorship back into the European public eye and the demands of the Wallbreaking Campaign to the international community in a more direct manner.

She hoped that the Internet would be able to return to being a bridge between societies, cultures and ideas, giving everyone the right to free access to information.

As she called for at the end of her speech:

"Let's break the digital iron curtain and build a more open, rational and inclusive network world!" The government has been working on the issue of the human rights of women.
