Chinese rights lawyer Wang Ruth recently fled to Taiwan and sought resettlement in a third country because of his involvement in the case of Beijing's Zion Church.United States News on September 3Wang Ruth, a partner of Beijing’s Widow law firm, has been representing pastors and followers of the Zion Church since October 2025; she said she and her colleagues are facing pressure from Chinese authorities to dissolve the law firm or be forced to shut down.

The incident was not the personal trouble of a single lawyer, but the Chinese regime’s continuous chain of suppression of the family church, deprivation of the right to defend the law, and forcing lawyers to leave the country. Beijing’s strike on the Church of Zion has extended from the detention of pastors and believers, to the qualification of lawyers, freedom of exit, the survival of law and family security. It reveals the real way the Chinese government operates: the law is not a barrier to protect faith and citizens’ rights, but a tool for the Party State machine to control society and cut off remedies.

Lawyers claim to be directly pressured by authorities

Wang Ruth said in a video interview that Chinese authorities told her that she and her colleagues had to dissolve the law office or the law office would be closed by the authorities.

Wang Ruth’s law firm has participated in the defense of the Church’s case. She said that the founder and her mentor, Zhang Kai, have been revoked and restricted to leave the country, and other lawyers have been suspended for six months. She also said that the judiciary required lawyers to stop acting in the Church’s cases and leave the office, and that some lawyers were also restricted when they tried to transfer.

Wang Ruth received a phone call from the Chinese authorities during her family holiday in Japan last month and was asked to meet back in Beijing. She said she was not in Beijing at the time and then decided not to return to China. After arriving in Taiwan, she requested a temporary stay from the local authorities to contact other countries to seek resettlement.

The repression of the Church of Zion continues

The Zion Church is one of China’s most influential urban family churches, founded by Pastor Kim.previously by United States. In October 2025, Kim and several Zion Church pastors and colleagues were taken to various parts of China in a case involving the so-called “illegal dissemination of religious content through the Internet.”

Reuters in July.Kim was released tomorrow and arrived in Los Angeles, but his daughter, Grace Jin, said eight members of the Zion Church were still detained in China. This means that Kim’s personal release did not end the CPC’s repression of the Zion Church, and the church network, detainees, families and defence lawyers are still under pressure.

The Communist regime has long demanded that religious activities be subject to the Party State's approval, registration and registration.Religious ChineseizationThe case of the Church of Zion shows that Beijing’s biggest fear is not the so-called “illegal religious activity,” but a community that is not ruled by the party, organized independently, spread independently, and independently gains believers’ trust.

The right of defence is systematically removed

The key to the Wang Ruth case is that the Chinese authorities are not only targeting believers, but also those who dare to provide legal agents for believers.ChinaAid said in March. The right to legal defence in the Sion Church cases is collapsing, Zhang Kay lawyer has been revoked, and several lawyers have been suspended for six months, causing difficulties to deal with the relevant cases.

The rights lawyers are a handful of people under the authoritarian regime who still try to stop arbitrary persecution through legal procedures. When the Chinese regime incorporated lawyer licenses, legal approvals, exit control and occupational livelihoods all into administrative control, the so-called “defence right” could turn into a paper that could be torn away at any time. Wang Ruth fled to Taiwan, indicating that the lawyer himself had been pushed into the risk chain of forced exile and political asylum.

This is also the most cruel part of the Chinese persecution mechanism: first, it makes religious groups “illegal” and then blocks their access to lawyers; first, it uses public security and national security to create fear, then it uses the judicial administration system to clean up professionals who are willing to defend; and finally, it isolates victims, lawyers and families.

Taiwan’s refugee system shortage emerges

Wang Ruth sought a temporary stay after arriving in Taiwan, but Taiwan did not have a formal refugee law. The agency that Taiwan allowed her to stay on the island temporarily and said it would be handled according to the relevant mechanisms.

China has long regarded Taiwan as a political enemy and may also use people’s flows for infiltration and security operations, but this cannot hide another reality: an increasing number of people from mainland China, Hong Kong or other Chinese-controlled areas are forced to seek a safe path because of religion, politics, news, legal agents or citizens’ actions.

Focus on China: This is a complete chain of responsibility for persecution

The core of Wang Ruth’s case was not a lawyer who “stayed in Taiwan”, but the result of the Communist Party regime’s reform of religious, judicial and social organizations with the logic of security of the Party State. The Church of Zion was oppressed, stating that the Communist Party could not tolerate an independent faith community; lawyers were photographed, shut down, restricted transfers and forced to dissolve laws, stating that the Communist Party could not tolerate independent legal agents; parties were forced to seek asylum across borders, stating that the persecution had crossed the boundaries of cases, forming a sustainable high-pressure political model.

This chain of responsibility involves at least the public security system, the judicial administrative system, the religious affairs management system, the local government law committee system and the family church’s long-term monitoring network. Follow-up should be focused on: official documents with Zhang Kai’s lawyer license revoked, administrative grounds for the dissolution of the Weidou law firm, the Sion Church’s list of still detained members, the specific division of public security in the October 2025 operation, and the role of the Beijing Judicial Bureau and the local religious affairs department in the cases.
