On July 10, 2026, former lawyer Wen Donghai went to the Gongcheng County Court in Guilin, Guangxi, to observe the retrial of lawyer Duan Hua. He was then restrained and taken away by several court officers in the courthouse lobby.

Open justice requires more than the word ‘public’ on a courtroom door. It requires that the public and legal colleagues can lawfully enter, observe proceedings and document judicial activity. Removing an observer adds another procedural question to the underlying case.
