A satellite photograph dated 30 September set up a new paved apron: two aircraft in each direction, with more than 20 secure vehicles in the front, followed by hangars and new buildings. This is not an air base in Yunnan, but a Ban Keun airport, 50 km north of Vientiane, Laos. Just the previous day, Beijing had announced the launch of the China-Yugon Joint Guarantee and Training Centre and the Old China-Friendly Aviation Institute. The photographs transform abstract “joint training” on the bulletin into runways, aircraft and logistics facilities that can be seen from outside.
The images provided by Vanter Satellite, reported by Reuters on 6 October, show that security analysts identified eight aircraft as jet coaches and light attack aircraft in K-8 (series JL-8). The photograph itself does not prove ownership of each aircraft, nor does it prove that the SLA has acquired exclusive access to the airport; However, it clearly shows that the facilities declared to be operational by the two armies are equipped with the actual presence of aircraft and guaranteed vehicles.

First graph: 2 September, runway is still in progress
Another earlier satellite landscape documented the airport renovation work: long strips of runways, parallel taxiways and the surrounding construction belts were stretched out of the former agricultural land. Reuters reported that the project had accelerated significantly since the end of 2025, with new large facilities replacing the old and poor airfields. The 2 September diagram, combined with the image of the end-of-month apron, clearly identifies the speed of advance between the construction work and the arrival of the aviation facility.

This is an official description of the purpose, but not a complete description of the military potential of the facility. On 15 October, Associated Press quoted satellite imagery to estimate that the runway was currently approximately 2,000 metres, with parallel taxiways and aprons capable of hosting more than 20 aircraft; If it continues, it is possible to accommodate larger aircraft in the future.

Viet Nam has territorial and maritime disputes with China in the South China Sea, and is therefore particularly concerned about the long-term deployment and resupply capability of China in Laos; The Ministry of Defence of Thailand emphasizes the right of Laos to conclude military cooperation agreements on its own, while continuing to observe them. The Associated Press analysts also cautioned that the airport does not currently have the same large-scale operational capability as the United States military overseas bases. That is why its significance should not be said to be that tomorrow will change the military balance in Asia, but that for the first time in the South-East Asian continent, the Chinese Air Force has an offshore node that can be used on a sustainable basis.
This node has also changed the situation in Laos. Railways, capital financing and economic exchanges have been closely linked to Vientiane in Beijing, and military aviation training and long-term logistics are now part of the network. For the Chinese Government, this is the accumulation of experience and regional influence in overseas operations; For Laos, training opportunities, strategic dependence and concerns of neighbouring countries are included. The photographs are of aircraft and cement, and they are in addition to the political options for a small and vulnerable country to be gradually integrated into the military configuration of a large country.
The airport is still under construction and the future presence of permanent deployment, an independent chain of command or larger combat aircraft will depend on the actual operations of the past. These future scenarios need not be written into faits accomplis. The 2 September runway and the 30 September eight aircraft are enough to say that Beijing is landing the abstract “common security” of the old-Chinese relationship on a specific land where military aircraft can take off and land.
