From Young Pioneers' Oath to Diplomatic Intimidation: Observations on the "Low-Ageization" of Patriotic Education and Authoritarian Backwardness under Xi Jinping's Regime
A short video circulating on social media platform Douyin has once again drawn attention to the comprehensive deepening and retrogression of ideological control under China's authoritarian system. In the video, multiple Chinese primary school students, wearing school uniforms and red scarves, stand in front of a Young Pioneers' background wall with the slogan "Ready: to struggle for the communist cause!" and take turns delivering highly adult-like and confrontational diplomatic rhetoric, directly criticizing Japanese politicians and shouting radical slogans such as "will suffer a thunderous counterattack" and "will bring about their own destruction".
This phenomenon is not an isolated incident, but rather a typical representation of the infiltration of China's national will and "wolf warrior" discourse into younger age groups since Xi Jinping came to power and implemented the "Red Gene" concept and the Patriotic Education Law.
I. Wolf Warrior Rhetoric Penetrating Young Children: Video Details and Discourse Deconstruction
The video, approximately 40 seconds long, features a standard political propaganda board of the Chinese Young Pioneers, with the organization's logo, the Communist Party flag, the national flag, and the "Oath of Entry" prominently displayed. Multiple Young Pioneers take turns appearing on camera, expressing strong political stances with passionate and even hostile expressions and body language.
The children in the video directly name Japanese politician Takaya Matsuura, warning her of "reckless remarks" and "foolish dreams," and sternly claim that "Taiwan is Chinese territory, with ironclad evidence" and that "the Taiwan issue is China's internal affairs, and Japan has no right to interfere."
Video Excerpt:
"Takaya Matsuura, listen to me! Taiwan is Chinese territory, with ironclad evidence..."
"A defeated country that doesn't reflect on its historical sins, yet covets Chinese territory, keep dreaming!"
"Inciting military action will lead to self-destruction... if you dare to cross the red line, you will suffer a thunderous counterattack!"
II. In-Depth Analysis: Xi Jinping Regime's Ideological Backwardness and "Authoritarian Infantilization"
Political and social observers point out that the children's expressions in the video are completely beyond the cognitive scope of their peers, and their vocabulary is highly reminiscent of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokespersons and official "wolf warrior" media. This phenomenon of pushing minors to the forefront of geopolitical struggles reflects three evil and backward characteristics of Xi Jinping's regime in terms of ideological control:
- Completely depriving children of their independent personality, "toolizing" and "weaponizing" them
Under Xi Jinping's authoritarian system, the essence of education has completely retrogressed from "establishing virtue and cultivating independent thinking citizens" to "shaping political obedience and loyalty." The system utilizes the weakness of minors' lack of critical thinking, forcibly instilling adult-world xenophobia and military threats into young children, transforming them into political propaganda tools for declaring a "wolf warrior" stance externally and creating a "total frenzy" internally.
- Victim narrative and hatred mobilization under the "Comprehensive National Security" concept
Unlike the education ideology during the reform and opening-up period, which emphasized "integrating with the international community and pursuing peaceful development," the Xi Jinping authorities have recently been vigorously promoting "wolf warrior diplomacy" and a victim mentality. By constructing a narrative of "external strong enemies constantly suppressing China" in schools, they guide children to establish national pride on the basis of external hostility and xenophobia. This kind of hatred-driven fanatic nationalism is essentially a means for the authoritarian regime to divert internal contradictions and consolidate its ruling legitimacy in the face of domestic economic downturn and international isolation.
- Combination of digital authoritarianism and grassroots political sycophancy
This phenomenon also exposes the distorted logic of modern authoritarian bureaucratic systems: under the pressure of central political assessments and the Patriotic Education Law, grassroots educational institutions and schools are forced to "layer by layer" complete political performance (KPI). Meanwhile, social media operators and algorithmic recommendations, in order to cater to official guidance and attract traffic, package and promote political performances like "children shouting slogans" with strong contrast, forming a vicious cycle of authoritarian politics and commercial algorithms collectively harvesting ideological traffic.
III. Overseas Public Opinion and Human Rights Advocates Warn: Widening Cognitive Gap, Endangering Regional Peace
After the video spread on overseas social media, it triggered strong concerns among educators, human rights advocates, and overseas Chinese communities. Many comments pointed out that simplifying complex geopolitics into a black-and-white "enemy vs. us" confrontation, devoid of historical complexity and international law, not only violates the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which emphasizes education should promote understanding, peace, and tolerance, but also causes irreversible damage to the mental health and wholesome personality of minors.
Overseas China experts pointed out: "When a regime systematically instills violent discourse like 'thunderous counterattack' and 'self-destruction' into children as young as a few or ten years old, it showcases not the strength of the nation, but the coldness and cruelty of authoritarian ideological control. This kind of fanatic xenophobia cultivated from a young age not only destroys the civilized qualities of China's next generation but also widens the cognitive gap between Chinese youth and universal values, injecting extremely dangerous uncertainty into future regional situations."
