In his interview, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andry Srbiga, confirmed that an invitation had been received to visit China and that no specific dates for the visit were available. He also noted that China was Ukraine ' s largest trading partner. Together, these two messages directly explain why Ukraine in the war is still willing to maintain a dialogue with Beijing: economic realities do not automatically disappear as a result of geopolitical conflicts.
The Lutherans spoke to Serbiga on October 17th.Ukraine wished to see Beijing play a role in the peace process and to continue to expand trade. This is not a situation in which Ukraine has given up its fight against Russian aggression, but rather a situation in which war diplomacy cannot be avoided. The Beijing claim to promote peace while maintaining close economic and trade relations with Moscow; Kiev, for its part, needs both markets and external support. The parties have different motivations to approach the negotiating table.
For a country in war, normal business relations can easily be intertwined with international political responsibilities. China ' s policy choices will affect the extent to which economic opportunities are available in Ukraine and will change the international pressure on Russia. Beijing cannot claim to have fulfilled its role of peace by speaking to both countries alone. Real influence cannot only be counted for trade growth and diplomatic engagement, but must also face the real costs of the continuation of war.
The invitation from Serbiga reminds people that Kiev has never had luxury conditions that would arbitrarily reject all economic partners. The Chinese leadership has another option — it can continue to equate neutral diplomatic language with its economic interests towards Russia, or it can decide whether to use these relations to promote more binding peace arrangements. This difference in choice is the political issue behind the line of enquiry on this visit to China.
