More than six years after the outbreak of the new coronavirus, the world still does not have an original archive of evidence that can fully answer where the virus came from. But on June 18, this year, a previously undisclosed batch of communications and documents released by the Office of the National Intelligence Directorate of the United States, once again pushed a location that was never to be bypassed back to the investigation center – the Wuhan Virus Institute.

The political part of the material is that the controversy around the "laboratory origin" within the U.S. intelligence system has been further publicised.ODNI directly accused the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of funding the U.S. Institute of Wuhan Institute for high-risk coronavirus research through a research funding chain, and said the new public communication showed that Anthony Fauci was involved in discussions about the origin of the new coronavirus affecting the U.S. intelligence system.ODNI even directly used Wuhan related research to trigger the outcome of the outbreak. This involves the internal responsibility of the U.S. government, and of course should continue to be tracked by the U.S., but no matter who in Washington has funded, degraded or blocked the investigation, can

The U.S. Congress's previous 520-page new coronavirus origin investigation report has further detailed the Wuhan Lab issue. The report cites information from the U.S. government that some researchers at Wuhan Virus Research Institute had been ill before the first public cases appeared in autumn 2019; Wuhan Virus Research Institute has long been engaged in SARS coronavirus research and used genetic engineering to make embedded viruses; some coronavirus engineering technologies have even increased the difficulty of recognizing others as modified. U.S. government data also pointed out that Wuhan Virus Research Institute has cooperated with the Chinese military at least since 2017.

This information is not a simple "laboratory leakage", but a question of evidence transparency that the Chinese Communist Party has not solved so far.If Beijing believes that the laboratory has nothing to do with the origin of the epidemic, the strongest response is never the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nor the publication of a white paper of data selected by the Chinese Communist Party, its own experts, and its own conclusions, but openly the original evidence that can verify this conclusion.

What SARS coronavirus was preserved before the outbreak? where is the laboratory’s complete virus sequence database? exists all relevant experimental records, sample output records, and biosecurity accidents records in the second half of 2019? can the health records of researchers before the outbreak be verified by truly independent investigators?

Six years ago, those issues that should have been the basis for global trace investigation still did not gain the transparency to match the scale of the disaster.

Beijing’s white paper on viral traceability this year continues to emphasize that China has been “publicly transparent” and cites an analysis of 7.6 million medical institutional screening records and 174 early cases, arguing that there was no abnormal respiratory disease cluster in Wuhan from October to early December

  1. The issue is right here: these conclusions are still based on a data system that China can officially control and screene. A government that has mastery of the original data declares itself to be transparent and cannot replace independent verification after external researchers have obtained the original data.

This is also the most inevitable political responsibility of the Communist Party in the issue of the origin of the new corona. A global disaster-causing virus first appeared on a large scale in Wuhan under its rule, and the same city has a long-standing high-level research institution for the research of the SARS coronavirus. In the face of such a major public interest, the first responsibility of the Communist Party should be assumed not to prove a certain theory of origin, but to preserve evidence, open evidence and allow the international community to independently investigate.

But the reality is going in the opposite direction.Around the early information of the epidemic, doctors were instructed in China, relevant information was controlled and the space for independent investigation was restricted; Wuhan Laboratory's most critical raw data has always failed to reach the degree of openness required for global independent investigation. So, the issue of the origin of the new crown is still in political debate six years later, and the party that has the most critical information on the scene is precisely an authoritarian regime with no independent media, independent justice and a real parliamentary investigation system.

This is the fundamental reason why the new coronavirus cannot cut off from the political system of the Communist Party of China.

In democracies, government department hiding information can face congressional citations, officials can be forced to swear, internal mail can be disclosed through judicial and parliamentary procedures, intelligence documents can be decrypted under political pressure. U.S. new material reveals itself that U.S. responsibility in the New Crown issue can also be continued to be investigated.

But in China, no congressional committee independent of the Communist Party of China has been able to send a petition to the Wuhan Virus Institute, no independent prosecutor’s office has been able to secure experimental records, and no Chinese journalist has been able to investigate the Wuhan Lab and early cases of the outbreak in 2019 without political intervention.

The most important meaning of the new round of declassification in the United States is also here.It brings the issue of the laboratory origin of what was politicized, repressed, and even once considered “conspiracy theory” six years ago back into the scope of evidence review, while reminding the world once again that no political effort to declare the end of the trace origin by the international community can replace evidence until Wuhan’s most critical original archives are truly opened.

The new coronavirus has taken millions of lives worldwide, changed billions of lives and caused years of economic and social trauma. In the face of such a disaster, the question of where the virus came from is not where Beijing could end up with a white paper on its own.

Only original evidence can truly end the dispute.

Opening the full experimental archives of the Wuhan Virus Research Institute, disclosing the virus databases before the outbreak, researchers’ health records and related military cooperation projects, will allow independent evidence to be obtained by investigators not controlled by the Chinese Communist Party – if Beijing continues to reject these most basic demands for transparency, the issue of the origin of the new corona will not end, and the Chinese government’s pursuit of responsibility for the origin and early concealment of the outbreak should not end.
