According to a report by The Paper, in a typical case, a police station instructor and a police officer borrowed from a special case group to handle a case, and in order to extract a confession, they restricted the suspect's food and sleep during the period of residential surveillance, causing the suspect to suffer serious physical harm and eventually contract Wernicke's encephalopathy, a rare disease. As a result, the two case handlers were held criminally responsible for suspected torture and were sentenced to three years and six months and two years and five months in prison, respectively.

Similarly, in cases handled by the Baise City Public Security Bureau '132' Special Case Group, there have been cases of related personnel being accused of suffering from Wernicke's encephalopathy.

We believe that torture to extract confessions should not be tolerated in modern rule of law.
