The September Customs data published by the Taiwan Treasury Department on 8 October gave three figures sufficient to re-write industry discussions: $8.722 billion in exports, 60.9 per cent over the same period and 35 months over the same period. The first one was rewritten for a single month, the second was much higher than the market had previously anticipated, while the third 35 consecutive months of growth exceeded the 34 months of record maintained between 1985 and 1988.

When this report card was issued, Beijing continued to exert pressure on Taiwan through military aircraft, naval police, diplomatic and economic means. What is most noteworthy for cross-Straits economic relations is not the kind of political victory or failure that is written about export growth, but the products, the customers and the production systems that are helping Taiwan to sustain it — and how much of that growth is concentrated in a few high-tech areas.

Infocommunications and electronic Zero, total, 80.6 per cent of exports

The Ministry of Finance of Taiwan announced total exports in September 2026 $8,722 million, information and communication and audiovisual products $39,133 million and electronic zero 3,131.3 million. (a) The station is recosted at three original amounts: 391.3 ÷872.2 = 44.9 ; (a) The share of electronic zero components 311.3 ÷872.2 = 35.7 ; The two categories combined US$ 70.26 billion, representing approximately 80.6 per cent of total exports per month. The total of exports from the remaining sectors was approximately $16.96 billion, or 19.4 per cent. This is clearer than the generic “AI-led growth”: growth is highly concentrated in high-technology manufacturing and associated delivery chains.

Recostable same-base figure: against an export of $8.722 billion in September 2026 and an increase of 60.9 per cent in the same year, the previous month was approximately $5.421 billion, with a single-month increase of approximately $33.01 billion. This calculation is based on rounded values of published data and cannot be used as a substitute for the exact values officially issued by the Ministry of Finance for the same period in

  1. Future tests of high growth sustainability require a distinction between new AI server orders, high base period comparisons, exchange rates and pre-tariff pre-shipment ratios.

Market concentration risk: While the rise in exports to the United States in the same month reduced direct reliance on mainland China as the end market, the excessive concentration of exports in United States large cloud computing companies could expose the industry to a few customer capital expenditure cycles. National security and industrial prosperity are not the same indicators: Taiwan has more technical orders and does not automatically eliminate military coercion in Beijing; Defence resilience will still need to be underpinned by a sustainable industrial division of labour, stability of electricity supply and air and sea transport capacity.

Of Taiwan ' s exports in September, approximately $80.6 was concentrated in information communications and electronic Zero components. This industrial concentration, calculated by the Ministry of Finance's published amounts, highlights the enormous opportunities that artificial intelligence demand presents for Taiwan, as well as the co-mingled shocks that may occur if global spending on capital for science and technology is weaker.

Not every export is running at 60.9%.

Ministry of Finance statistics show that exports of information, communication and audiovisual products in September amounted to approximately $39.13 billion, about double the same period last year; The exports of electronic Zero components amounted to approximately $31.13 billion, an increase of 45.3 per cent over the same period. Both categories together account for the majority of exports per month. Artificial intelligence servers, advanced semiconductors, associated electronic components and global cloud computing capital expenditures have been the main driving forces of this round of growth.

The comparison base figure for the same period last year, the rise in product prices and the advance availability of electronics for a new generation of consumers by customers also affected growth rates. Thus, 60.9 per cent of nominal export growth cannot be translated directly into a 60.9 per cent increase in plant production over the same period, let alone as proof of a synchronized salary increase for all industries in Taiwan.

Export records are accompanied by an increase in imports. The same preliminary statistics from the Ministry of Finance show that imports in September amounted to $63.59 billion, an increase of 51.7 per cent over the same period, with a surplus of approximately $23.63 billion in the trade in goods for one month. The large increase in exports and imports at the same time indicates that advanced manufacture in Taiwan is not only selling goods but also continuously buying equipment, raw materials and upstream components. Only by observing both would the internationalization of the supply chain be mistaken for all values being completed on the island.

The United States has jumped to major export destinations, reflecting the evolution of the global AI procurement chain

Reuters reported on 8 October that the largest market for Taiwan ' s current export record had shifted to the United States, showing that global AI investment and the purchasing power of the United States ' giants in science and technology remained at the heart of industry demand. The division of labour between semiconductor design, replacement, electronic system assembly and server integration in Taiwan can be accomplished over a wide range of areas, so an increase in exports to the United States does not mean that each product is manufactured from scratch in Taiwan.

The same day, the electricity stock was announced, and a record amount of $1.49 trillion was collected by the third quarter; In September, a single month, the new t-dollar was collected at a rate of 51.19 billion yuan, an increase of 54.6 per cent over the previous year. This is not simply to add to the trend of customs statistics towards the same AI demand: the accumulated electricity is business income and customs statistics are the value of goods across borders, which cover different transactions and the time of recognition.

China and Hong Kong remain part of Taiwan ' s regional business chain, but the relative position of the export destinations is being affected by AI infrastructure needs, United States technological investment and the global diversification of production nodes. Monthly customs data, disaggregated by destination and product, reveal that the growth of Taiwan ' s exports is driven by global scientific and technological needs, supply chain adjustments and regional business linkages, not a single result of a particular geopolitical policy.

35 months of growth, to counter another risk: too concentrated

The head of statistics in Taiwan ' s Ministry of Finance, Cai Mi Na, spoke of sustained growth, emphasizing such factors as global investment in technological innovation, the expansion of AI applications, the upgrading of specifications for electronic products and the tight price-for-supply push. These explanations are valid and point to a structural problem: if the main increment comes from AI-related industries, the fluctuations may also be brought back to Taiwan.

The capital expenditure cycle of international cloud computing firms, the United States policy on the export of advanced chips, energy prices and the ability to expand semi-directive institutional processes will all affect future orders. In particular, against the backdrop of China ' s continued military deterrence and the United States ' push for some manufacturing links to expand their production, Taiwan ' s enterprises also need to balance domestic R & D with overseas plant-building, intellectual property protection and geographical risk.

Nor is this round of growth a substitute for real observations of SMEs and traditional industries. Central reported that exports of non-electronic, telecommunication products also registered a 25.4 per cent increase in September, indicating that improvements were not limited to two main categories; However, the profitability and employment status of the different subdivisions still need to be confirmed separately from industry wages, business orders and local statistics.

The more the record is bright, the more policy responsibility falls to specific supply and demand

The Taiwan Treasury Ministry expects that exports may reach between $85.2 billion and $87.7 billion in October, with the possibility of a year-round increase in total exports over $900 billion. This is a sector vision rather than a business that has been achieved, and the future is still influenced by AI investment, global inflation, geo-conflict and US science and technology policy.

The diplomatic and military pressure on Taiwan in Beijing has not stopped, and Taiwan is far from being isolated from the geohazard. However, the September customs ledger showed that the international buyer ' s reasons for choosing Taiwan were not limited to political support, but also included engineering capacity, reliability of delivery and supply of advanced technology. This commercial link increases Taiwan ' s importance in global industry, without automatically eliminating the risk of war or resolving domestic distribution issues.

Taiwan ' s record of exports under military deterrence reflects the fact that the global technology market does not simply place orders according to the political will of Beijing. Artificial intelligence demands have expanded Taiwan ' s international industrial position, but have also concentrated economic growth on a few technological products and overseas clients. The pressure in Beijing cannot erase this competitiveness; The Government of Taiwan, for its part, had to address the energy, wage and regional development imbalances resulting from industrial concentration and avoid a disconnect between the total brightness and the income of the general workforce.
