China's pressure on Taiwan does not necessarily require fire.

A marine police boat and a sea militia fishing boat, if they continue to be present around Taiwan, can force Taiwan to send ships and guards. Every day, it is not the headlines that consumes fuel, ship life, staff time and war effort.

On 7 October, at the Taipei Taipei Taifing Taifun 2026 Air flight strategic forum, the head of a number of defence companies put the issue directly on the table: Taiwan needed more unmanned and autonomous systems, not just for post-war strikes, but also to cope with daily consumption before the war broke out.

The grey zone tactics in Beijing are already asymmetrical in cost structure

The Chinese navy, the navy and the maritime militia have been operating around Taiwan for a long time. In order to be targeted, Taiwan often has to send naval or naval vessels to carry out their supervision.

At the Forum, the issue was described by the Sharonic Technologys executive, Mira Resnick, as being very specific: every hour a single corvette tracks a militia fishing vessel, it is one hour less to carry out other tasks, while consuming the life of the vessel, fuel and the most scarce water force time.

This is the core advantage of grey area action: Beijing can use less costly and legally ill-identified vessels to create pressure, while Taiwan has to respond with more expensive and scarcer formal forces.

If this exchange lasts for several years, the pressure will be as razed as sandpaper on Taiwan ' s war-ready resources.

The U.S. system is really about to change. This is the cost calculation.

The autonomous capabilities discussed at the Forum include drones, drones, sensor networks and AI support decision-making. Their value is not just “high-tech”, but the removal of daily surveillance from expensive man-made platforms.

A drone can patrol for long periods without a waterer shift; The drones can quickly identify the target without having to bring the large vessels close to each other. With multiple unmanned platforms connected, Taiwan could establish continuous surveillance before deciding when a human presence would be required.

This is not a replacement of all military personnel with robots, but rather a gravitational resource that is left to the task of really requiring them.

Xi Jinping is turning “war preparedness” into “continuing consumption in peacetime”

One obvious feature of the military pressure on Taiwan in recent years in Beijing is that the frequency of operations is increasing, but it is as much as possible kept below the threshold of full-scale war.

The passage of military aircraft across the middle line of the Strait, the warship bypass, the entry of the naval police into disputed waters and the long-term activities of militia vessels are not sufficient to trigger war alone, but they demand a constant response from Taiwan.

This model is extremely beneficial to Xi Jinping's regime: it can gradually change what is normal and at the same time test the response time, troop deployment and political will of Taiwan.

One of the real objectives is to make Taiwan pay the cost of preparing for war before it has occurred.

Future Taiwan’s battle, probably first of all, who can hold on more cheaply for longer

The conventional military prefers to calculate the number of warplanes, missiles and warships. But there is another figure to be calculated for the grey area: how much an hour of patrol, how many days a sailor can go to sea a year and how much extra time a ship can take to sail.

Beijing has a larger fleet, a larger maritime police and a maritime militia system that can generate continuous contact in quantitative terms.

Taiwan, if it responded to one in the same way, must have a long-term cost disadvantage.

The real strategic value of an unincorporated system is therefore not a showdown, but a change in the consumption formula devised by Xi Jinping: Let Beijing not automatically trade for Taiwan’s higher cost for every additional harassment.

The Taiwan Straits may not begin with the first missile. It may have started well in the hours of a day, with hundreds of nautical miles and an earlier consumed ship.
